When we first arrived in Edmonton on Sept 12, our goal was to find a trailer to suit our van. An RV salesman referred us to Wholesale Trailers in Leduc. We arrived to a sea of trailers. Close top, open top, white, black, all sizes. Closing time is 5pm, and it's 4:55pm. Tom offers to stay late to show us their products. We found the perfect trailer in a matter of moments, perfect for everything except our budget. So we move down to another smaller model, eventually we found a beat up home made model for $650 bucks... we'll take it.
The next morning, Rob and I head down to the site to do the paperwork & finish the sale. It needs some work, it has a broken window, so we decided to take out the window and cover it with a sheet of steel. The door needs work, and it could use a good cleaning. It would look better with a new paint job, but we can take care of that later. We can't get it registered for the road without a serial no., that will take time, so we leave the Getaway Van behind and take our old van, Agnes, to Calgary. Next time we're in Edmonton we'll pick it up.
Arriving in Calgary, we stop for a bite. We parked next to a little strip mall, and as the others walk into the restauant, I pop into a little art suplies store. I had only once painted prior to this occassion, so I went to the counter with a simple request. "I would like to purchase enough supplies to start painting without taking up too much space." She suggests water colour.
"The pigment takes up much less space then an oil paint." She hands me a Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colours Sketchers; Pocket Pack. "What size paintings do you want?"
"Something small."
She hands me a Acquarello Watercolour booklet of 25 cold pressed cotton 5x7 pieces. "You'll need something to seperate the paper." So she picks me up an Italian made 'Premier'... thingy which looks like a dull flexible blade with a wooden handle.
In total, my initial investment in becoming a watercolour painter is about $65. I then proceded to invite the staff to our show that night at the Liberty Lounge at Mount Royal College and move on to my meal. A veggy wrap with onion rings.
